Do you work with children or young adults in your library? If so, then you need the Youth Services Section Interest Group of the Maine Library Association, and we need you. (MASL members:  Currently you need to join MLA in order to be on the mailing list for the Youth Services Section Interest Group.)

Our Mission

The Youth Services Section of MLA is composed of children's librarians and other interested librarians. The section sponsors programs at the MLA Annual Conference as well as the Beg, Borrow, or Steal program in August. The section's annual meeting is held during Reading Round-Up in April. In addition, the section produces materials of interest to librarians dealing with children's services.

The YSS Chair directs the business of the section and serves on the MLA Executive Council. As a member of the Executive Council, the Chair of the section acts as liaison between the section and the Council. On occasion, the Chair also serves on other committees as directed by the MLA President.

What We offer

  • Professional Development workshops and conference

  • Increased awareness of the needs of young people in the community

  • Further awareness of quality children's literature

  • Promote services to children and young adults through our web site

Get involved:

  • Be on the Youth Services Section Executive Board
Currently the board consists of five members. The mission of the board is to promote and to improve library service to young people.

  • Volunteer for the Reading Round-Up (RRU) Committee
Plan for this exciting annual event. One member of this committee will serve on the YSS Board.

  • Volunteer for the Maine Student Book Award Committee (MSBA)
There are three members from MLA, three from MASL, and three from Maine Reading Association. This group reviews new books for possible inclusion on the MSBA list. This list of approximately 30-40 highly regarded titles is provided to all schools and public libraries serving grades four through eight. The list then provides the basis from which students may vote for a favorite in April.

  • Volunteer for the Lupine Award and Katahdin Award Committee
There are eight members of this committee. Two from each of the Maine Regional Library System Districts, and two others: the chair of the YSS Board and the Past Chair of the Youth Services Section Interest Group Board. Members serve for two year terms. The mission of the Lupine Committee is to: encourage the reading, writing, illustrating, and study of children's literature in Maine.

  • Volunteer to work on the Youth Services Section website
This is a new area which needs volunteers and direction from a techno-savvy Children's Librarian.

  • Recruit new members!
Each and every one of you is on this committee! Do it today!
